“In Brazil, there is a strong culture of entrepreneurship among relatives. What is important in this relationship is to professionalize the business management in order to avoid mistakes and friction within the family,” states the president of Sebrae, Guilherme Afif Domingos.
The executive further emphasizes that it is important to separate professional life from personal life, such as not mixing the company’s cash with personal cash. According to him, when the relationship is grounded in professionalism, working as a family can be even more profitable.
When involving the family, according to Sebrae, it is necessary to remunerate the relative employee as a professional, in accordance with the market salary and the function to be performed. Furthermore, no granting of privileges to the employee or partner merely because they are a family member. “The ideal is to demand results with even greater rigor in order to set an example for the others,” Sebrae emphasizes. “Without these precautions, the one who loses is the business, which becomes less competitive.”
Afif Domingos reinforces that in the globalized world competition is very fierce and consumers are increasingly demanding. “For this reason, a family enterprise, just like any other, needs to pursue innovation in order to become competitive in the market. To innovate is the path to standing out, to showing a differential, and to continuing to grow,” he says.
